“Maybe?” she repeats back to me, a smirk on her face, because she knows a kiss is exactly what I want right now.
I hear the coach yell my name again, clearly pissed off that I’m not on the field with the rest of the team. I don’t really care, my gaze drifting to Madison’s mouth. “Fuck it. Yes, I do,” I murmur, as I curl my hand around the back of her neck, pull her close and kiss her.
All around us, people suddenly start cheering, as though everyone in the stadium is watching us, as though they were all waiting for this moment. Madison’s mouth curves into a smile against mine, but I don’t pull away, kissing her deeper, never wanting to stop.
“Lieberman!” the coach bellows, standing right behind me now and definitely pissed off.
I reluctantly pull back, grinning, even as my heart pounds in my chest at my open declaration toward this girl in a stadium full of people. “See you after the game,” I say with a wink, before jumping down onto the field and jogging past the coach with a quick nod and toward the rest of my teammates.
“You sly fucking dog,” Reid says with a laugh, as he punches my shoulder. I try for a casual shrug, failing because I’m unable to wipe the smile off my face. “You better not get distracted during the game like you did at practice,” he adds.
Logan bursts out laughing. “Oh my fucking god, like you can talk, Bowen.”
The game is good though, we’re killing it against the other team and I’m somehow managing to keep my shit together even knowing Madison is up in the stands watching me. I’m pretty sure my heart never stops racing, an explosion of energy coursing through my veins ever since that kiss.
Toward the end though, I get hit, really fucking hard, my mind no longer on the game but instead on the fact that as soon as this is over, I’m heading over to her place. I have no idea what’s going to happen when I get there, but as I lie on the ground, staring up at the sky and sucking in a deep lungful of air, trying to catch my breath, I know what I want to happen.
“Dude, you okay?” Logan asks, hovering over me as he holds out his hand.
I grab it and he pulls me up, wincing as pain shoots through my left side as I mumble a thanks before walking off the field. I glance up at the stands, see Madison watching me, her hands clasped together, a look of concern on her face as she sits on the edge of her seat. Her reaction makes me smile and I give her a wave to let her know I’m okay. I like that she’s here, that she seems worried about me.
Which is why as much as I might want things to happen tonight, I’m not pushing it. This girl is too special, too important and I want to make sure everything that happens between us is what we both want.
I watch the end of the game from the sidelines, cheering with the rest of my teammates when we win, taking us another step closer to the finals.
After, I hit the locker room with the rest of the guys, hoping the debrief, injury assessment and other shit we have to go through is quick, so I can head over to Madison’s. The team medic clears me of anything serious, and I’m grateful I won’t be missing the next game, although I can already tell I’ll be sporting a nice bruise in a couple of hours.
“You’re not coming?” Reid asks, eyeing the fact I’m dressed in a pair of track pants and a t-shirt and clearly not joining the rest of the team for the standard post-game piss up at The Last Drop.
“Nope,” I say with a grin.
Reid laughs, shaking his head as we make our way out of the locker room. Sienna and Amy are waiting for Reid and Logan, and I watch as Reid pulls his girlfriend close and plants a hard kiss on her mouth, his hands on her ass.
Watching them, there’s a part of me that wished I’d told Madison to wait for me so that I could have a moment like this. Instead, I pull my phone from my pocket and send her a quick text.
Me: leaving now…what do you like on your pizza, I’ll grab it on the way?
Madison: anything! I eat pretty much everything. You remember how to get here?
Me: girl after my own heart 🙂 And yep, I do. C u soon.
I call in the order as I’m walking to the car, grabbing it on the way before heading over to Madison’s place. My whole body is still buzzing, that nervous energy still coursing through me because I’m so fucking excited to see her tonight, especially knowing that I’m going to her house, where anything could happen. The kiss in my car a few nights ago was one thing, but then there was that one at the stadium tonight in front of everyone. The one that pretty much said something was happening between us.
Something I was discovering I really, really wanted.
When I get to her house, I pause, taking a deep breath before I get out of the car. It feels like my hand is shaking as I knock on the door, my heart pounding in my chest as I wait for her.
What the hell is wrong with me? I’m never like this about a girl.
Finally, the door opens, only it’s not Madison standing on the other side, but another girl who looks vaguely familiar. “Hi,” she says, smiling widely. “I’m Paige, you must be Matt?”
“That’s me,” I confirm with a nod. “Nice to meet you.”
Paige smirks, opening the door wider to let me in. “Madison’s in the kitchen, come in.”
I toe my sneakers off when I step inside, leaving them by the door before I follow Paige past the living room and into the kitchen where Madison stands, talking to another girl.
“Hey,” I say, smiling at Madison as I put the pizza on the counter.
She smiles back at me, even as her cheeks flush. “Hi,” she replies, almost shyly. “Matt, this is Stacey and I guess you already met Paige?”
I nod, saying a quick hello to Stacey who just giggles, before squeezing Madison’s arm and then walking about of the kitchen with Paige.
“Wow, that was subtle,” Madison says, rolling her eyes as she steps closer.
Chuckling, I reach out and take her hand in mine, tugging her closer. “Totally,” I murmur, before brushing my lips against hers. “Hi,” I whisper, kissing her again. “Did you enjoy the game?”
She smiles against my mouth, her hand moving to my hip as she kisses me back. “I did actually, it was better than I thought it would be.”
I burst out laughing, wrapping my arm around her shoulders and holding her close. “We’ll make a football fan out of you yet,” I tease.
She smirks. “Guess I’ll need to be if this is going to continue,” she says, teasingly.
I pull back a little. “Do you want this to continue?” I ask, trying to keep things light even though this is the first time we’ve actually talked about what might be happening between us.
“Do you?” she throws back at me, not answering my question.
I smile, my other arm snaking around her waist as I pull her flush against me. “Very much so.”
Madison’s eyes shine, a huge smile on her face as she looks up at me. “Me too.”
We eat the pizza in her kitchen, sitting side by side at the island, with a couple of beers. Madison asks me a million questions about the game and I explain some of the rules and plays and where we stand with the finals and stuff.
I like that she seems genuinely interested in learning about it and even though her not being into football wouldn’t be a dealbreaker or anything, it means a lot that she’s trying.
“So, you’ve got a couple more games till finals then, right?” she asks.
I nod, finishing my slice of pizza. I think I’ve eaten about three for every one of Madison’s. “Yep. And you realize you’re gonna have to come to all of them now, don’t you?”
“Yep,” I reply, brushing my thumb against her bottom lip, catching a bit of sauce. “You’re my good luck charm.”
She arches a brow at me. “Is that so?”
“Uh huh,” I murmur, leaning in to kiss her lips this time. “I’m gonna need one of those pre-game kisses each week, too.”
Madison giggles, grabbing my chin in her hand as she holds me close. “You’re very cheeky, you know that right?”
I smile. “Am I?” I tease. “I just thought a precedent had been set, what with me playing such a good game tonight, that’s all.”
She laughs, kissing me hard before pulling back and standing. “You want another beer?”
She grabs a couple more from the fridge, standing on the other side of the island. “You wanna watch a movie or something?” She’s watching me, an unreadable look on her face as she waits for my answer.
“Yep, sounds good.”
I expect her to walk to the living room, but she doesn’t, taking me down a short hall toward what I quickly discover is her bedroom. When I step inside, I hear the door closing behind us and I turn to find Madison standing in the middle of her room, watching me.
“Is this okay?” she asks, her words quiet.
I smile, my eyes roaming around her room. I wonder if I’m the first guy she’s ever brought in here. “If you’re okay with it, I’m okay with it,” I tell her, stepping over to her desk, where photos are stuck on the wall above it. “Is this your family?” I ask, gesturing to one of them.
Madison walks over, standing beside me. “Yeah, me, my two brothers and my parents.”
I nod. “You guys look close.”
“We are,” she replies. “Are you close with your family?”
I turn to her, smiling. “Yeah, we are, my mom still does my laundry when I go home remember?”
Madison laughs now, shaking her head a little as she walks over and sits on her bed. I follow her, noticing the small flatscreen TV that sits on a bookshelf at the end of her bed as I sit beside her, the two of us side by side against the headboard, our legs stretched out in front of us.
“Actually, that reminds me,” I say, taking a sip of beer before putting the bottle on the side table. “You live in a house, which I’m guessing has a laundry?” Madison nods, a small smile on her face. “So how come you were at the laundromat that night?”
She lets out a laugh, shaking her head. “Would you believe it if I said ours had also died and we were waiting for the landlord to fix it?”
Laughing, I say, “Oh, so it was like fate or something? Us meeting.”
“Fate?” she says with a smile. “Or maybe just crappy appliances in college housing?”
I cross my arms over my chest, shaking my head as I smile at her. “Nah, I think it was fate.”
Madison scoffs, laughing as she shoves me in the side a little. I can’t hide the wince as she gets me right in the spot where I got clocked by my opponent tonight.
“Oh shit, sorry, I forgot you got hurt,” she says, her smile falling.
I let out a slow breath, smiling at her. “It’s okay, it’s not that bad.”
“Are you sure?” she asks, genuinely concerned.
I nod. “Yeah, I mean I’m gonna have a killer bruise, but nothing broken so I’m all good.”
“Can I.” She pauses, her eyes drifting to my side. “Can I see?”
I swallow hard, waiting until her gaze lifts to mine before I whisper, “Yeah,” my voice husky and low. Without taking my eyes off hers, I reach behind and pull my t-shirt over my head, dropping it on the bed beside me.
I watch as Madison’s eyes move lower, widening a little as they take in the bruise on my side before moving over my stomach and up to my chest.
“It looks bad,” she says quietly.
I lift a shoulder in a shrug. “It looks worse than it is, I promise. Doc checked me out, I’m good.” I give her a smile, even as my heart pounds in my chest at the way she’s looking at me. I wonder if she can tell, if she can see it beating hard and fast behind my ribs. My whole body feels electrified, as I mentally will my dick not to get hard. She hasn’t even touched me.
As if she hears me, she lifts her arm now, her hand hovering over my skin, but not yet touching. I feel goosebumps spring up everywhere, my stomach muscles tensing at just the thought she might be about to touch me and what it means that she might want to.
“Is this okay?” she whispers.
I reach out and cup her jaw in my hand, my thumb brushing across her mouth. “It’s all okay, Madison,” I murmur. “You can look, you can touch. You can do whatever you want to me.”
I watch as she swallows, her tongue poking out to wet her bottom lip as though she’s trying to decide what to do. Inside, I’m silently begging her to touch me, to put her hands on me, even if that’s all she does tonight.
I want this woman to touch me, so fucking badly.
